Credit scores and loan applications

How credit scores are used in Indian personal-loan applications, why “I don't know” is a reasonable answer, and what not to share to find out.

A credit score is a summary of information a credit bureau holds about your borrowing and repayment. Lenders may use it as one input. It is not a guarantee of approval, and a high score does not fix a loan that is large relative to your income.

There is more than one score

In India, people often talk about a CIBIL score. TransUnion CIBIL is one credit information company. Experian, Equifax, and CRIF High Mark also operate. A lender might use one bureau, another, or its own model. Scores from different bureaus can differ because they do not all hold the same accounts.

Zup Loans is not a bureau and does not retrieve your score. The form asks for a band, including “I don't know”, so you are not pushed to invent a number.

How a band can affect a loan

A lender might refuse an application, offer a smaller amount, or price the loan higher when the history shows missed payments. Some products are only offered above a cutoff. The records on this site do not contain a verified cutoff, so the checker does not reject you for a low band. It does warn you that a lender might.

Finding your score without creating a new risk

  • Use a channel you already trust, such as your bank or the bureau's own site.
  • Do not install a loan app only because it promises to reveal your score.
  • Do not share a banking OTP, card PIN, or net-banking password to “unlock” a score.
  • Read whether the provider will also make a credit enquiry, and what else it will do with your mobile number.

Paying a stranger an upfront fee to “repair” a score is a common path into a scam. Repayment history changes when debts are paid as agreed, not when someone on a messaging app says they can edit a bureau.
